What is Serfdom? (iobag):
A serf (krepostnoy) was a term for an unfree peasant in the Russian Empire. While the origins of serfdom can be traced back to the 11th Century, history showed an increasing control over the serfs' rights and freedom as time went on. As a whole, serfdom came to Russia much later than in other European countries. Slavery remained a major institution in Russia until 1723, when Peter the Great converted the household slaves into house serfs. Russian agricultural slaves were formally converted into serfs earlier in 1679. Serfs were given to estates and flight was a criminal offense. Russian landowners eventually gained almost unlimited ownership over Russian serfs. The landowner could transfer the serf without land to another landowner while keeping the serf's personal property and family, however the landowner had no right to kill the serf. By the mid-19th century, the peasants composed a majority of the population, and according to the census of 1857 the number of private serfs was 23.1 million out of 62.5 million Russians. By comparison, the United States (U.S.) had approximately 4 million slaves by 1860, the British Empire had 776,000 slaves when it abolished slavery in 1834, and Brazil had a slave population of roughly 750,000 by the time slavery was abolished in 1888. Serfdom was abolished in the Russian Empire in 1861 under a major reform stimulated by Tsar Alexander II. |

Tsarevna/ Daughter of Tsar, also called Grand Princess or Velikaya Knyaginya.

Knyaginya / Princess (not of royal family)

Explanation of the Russian Naming System
Russian names are comprised of three parts: a given name, a patronymic, and a family name (surname). They are generally presented in that order, Ivan Ivanovich Korf, where "Ivan" is the first name, "Ivanovich" is a patronymic (his father's name is Ivan), and "Korf" is the family name.
Virtually every Russian name has a diminutive or informal/affectionate form (e.g. equivalent is William being called Billy), which can fluctuate depending on the closeness of the parties and the level of affection. The diminutive forms of some of the characters in Bednaya Nastya are as follows:
Alexander - Sasha (most common), Sashenka (very affectionate/almost motherly).
Vladimir - Volodya, Vova
Mikhail (Michael) - Misha
Andrey - Andryusha
Anastasia - Nastya
Anna - Anya, Anyechka (very affectionate)
Natalie - Natasha
Olga - Olya
Sofia - Sonya, Sonyachka
Tatyana - Tanya
Yelizaveta (Elizabeth) - Liza, Lizan'ka (very affectionate)
Varvara (Barbara) - Varya
The patronymic of a person is always based on the first name of the father and is written in all documents. If used, it must follow the first name (e.g. Elizabeth Petrovna; Vladimir Ivanovich). It is important to remember that the patronymic is not equivalent to an English middle name and follows different abbreviation conventions. A suffix (meaning either "son of" or "daughter of") is added to the father's given name-in modern times, males use -ович -ovich, while females use -овна -ovna. If the suffix is being appended to a name ending in "й" (y) or a soft consonant, the initial o becomes a ye (-евич -yevich and -евна -yevna). There are also a few exceptions to this pattern; for example, the son of Ilya is always Ilyich, not Ilyevich (likewise the daughter of Ilya is Ilinichna).
Although everyone in Russia is required to have three parts to their names, the full three-part name form is virtually never used in direct communication and it is generally reserved for documents and public speeches. In most circumstances, one or two parts of the name are usually omitted. Different combinations of names denote varying levels of respect. It is common to use a first name and patronymic (e.g., Andrey Platonovich) for people who aren't close to address each other, by younger people to address older people, even older relatives, as a form of respect. Diminutive first names without any patronymic are used by close friends or lovers, siblings, and parents to call their children. |
